Als medial vielseitig agierender Künstler verwendet Franz Graf
Zeichnungen, Objekte, Installationen, Fotografien und
neokonzeptuelle Malerei in seinen raumgreifenden
Installationen. Zarte, virtuose Kompositionen aus Tusche und
Grafit kombiniert er mit Fotografien, monochromen schwarzen
Flächen, lyrischen Schriftbildern und düsteren, oft
apokalyptisch wirkenden Bildwelten. Abstrakt geometrische
Symbole kontrastiert Graf mit organischen Strukturen; präzise
gesetzten Buchstaben stellt er atmosphärisch dichte Zeichnungen
gegenüber. Einzelne bildnerische, als Fraktale entstandene
Elemente werden dabei in das übergeordnete Ganze einer
Rauminstallation eingebunden und auf komplexe Weise
verwoben.
Die Grenzen zwischen Raum und Werk hebt der Künstler auf, indem
er architektonische Gegebenheiten, räumliche Markierungen oder
alltägliche Gebrauchsgegenstände und Codes integriert. Graf
schafft eigene künstlerische Universen, in denen es um
Reflexionen über existenzielle Befindlichkeiten geht. So kreist
sein Schaffen thematisch um das menschliche Sein, um Erlebnisse
und Empfindungen, die das Ringen des Menschen mit Einsamkeit,
Verletzung, Entstehen und Vergehen darstellen. Anlässlich der
Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle Krems erscheint eine retrospektiv
angelegte Monografie mit Arbeiten der letzten 30 Jahre.
As
an artist at home in an extremely wide variety of media, Franz
Graf makes use of drawings, objects, installations, photographs
and neo-conceptual painting in his large-scale installations.
He combines tender, virtuous compositions of Indian ink and
graphite with photographs, monochrome black expanses, lyrical
typefaces and gloomy visual worlds, often seemingly
apocalyptic. Graf contrasts abstract-geometric symbols with
organic structures, juxtaposes precisely set letters with
atmospherically dense drawings. Individual visual elements
created as fractals are integrated into the overlying entity of
a spatial installation and complexly woven in. The artist
abolishes the borders between the room and the work by
integrating architectural elements, spatial markings and
everyday objects and codes. Graf creates his own artistic
universes, which are not so much about a narration or a
concrete statement, but rather reflections on existential
orientations, to which something enigmatic is always attached.
His creative work thus revolves around the subject of human
existence and experiences and feelings representing the
struggle of people with loneliness, hurt, coming into being and
passing away. To mark this comprehensive solo exhibition in the
Kunsthalle Krems, a monograph is being issued which is laid out
as a retrospective and which presents an overview of the works
created in the last 30 years.
