Als Reaktion auf den Militärputsch in Brasilien und die einhergehende repressive Politik folgte eine Suche nach einem neuen künstlerischen Ausdruck jenseits der gängigen Klischees von Brasilien. Ohne explizit politisch zu sein, sollten der Monotonie und Monochromie der Epoche die reiche, kulturelle Diversität des Landes, die vitale Energie und die Lust am schrillen Spektakel gegenübergestellt werden. Hélio Oiticica, einer der Begründer der brasilianischen Tropicália-Bewegung, sah in seiner künstlerischen Arbeit ein Mittel, »das Delirium zu organisieren«. Dahinter steckt eine Protestkunst des wilden, freien Denkens, grellen Farbenspiels und der extravaganten Konzepte.
Mit Schlüsselwerken wie »Tropicália« von Hélio Oiticia zieht die Publikation einen historischen Querschnitt durch die Vielfalt der künstlerischen Anarchie und entfaltet einen Parcours von der bildenden Kunst, über die Musik bis hin zum Film und zur Poesie und zeigt, wie der kreative Impuls in Arbeiten zeitgenössischer brasilianischer Künstler bis zum heutigen Tag weiterwirkt.

As a reaction to the military putsch in Brazil and the repressive politics that followed, a search began for a new artistic expression beyond the standard clichés about Brazil.
Without being explicitly political the monotony and monochromatic feel of the era should be confronted with the vital energy, the delight in garish spectacle and the rich diversity
of the country. Hélio Oiticica, one of the founders of the Brazilian Tropicália movement, saw in his artistic work a means of “organizing this delirium”. Behind it is hidden a protest art of wild, free thinking, dazzling play of colors and of extravagant concepts.
With key works such as “Tropicália” by Hélio Oiticica the publication sets off on a historical cross section through the diversity of artistic anarchy and goes on a tour leading from the fine arts, through music, to film and poetry, and shows how the creative impulse lives on to the present day in the works of contemporary Brazilian artists.
